Christmas is nearly here!

It's been ages. I did not have the impetus to write much or perhaps, if I did write what i was thinking about, it would have been a critique of a certain class of people.

Anyhow........Christmas is coming!!! And i love Christmas to bits, love the lights, love the atmosphere, love the wrapping paper, love the shopping, love the fact that Starbucks actually uses festive red cups each Christmas season! What would make Christmas really perfect? Snow (NOT snowstorm) and a snowman on my front lawn. I adore snowmen, real ones, not those woolly ones made out of cotton wool. Somehow, i always envisioned that Christmas would be perfect with snow.

What makes my day? When Little Bean calls me "MiMi". Yeah, that's what he calls me, and it fills me with joy when he calls me and flashes that cheeky grin of his. At times, i do miss the freedom of having all my time to myself, but really, i would not trade motherhood for anything. Not even when Little Bean is at his worst and brattiest behaviour.

Christmas shopping!!! I love!!!

I want to buy myself a new watch coz I refuse to repair my shitty Rolex anymore (it can just go rot and die). Damn you, Rolex. I'm not going to buy you anymore! Pfffft.

Guess what?

I don't run a charity organisation.

Honestly, sometimes I find it hard to understand the furor over this DBSS issue. Design, Build & Sell Scheme right? Whatever that means, I can only assume DBSS housing is more fancy as compared to a normal HDB flat. Although when you think about it, DBSS = Flat, pretty much anyway. Except for the pricing. It’s simple Demand & Supply. If there is no demand, there will be no supply. And if there is a demand, there will be a supply. So despite the bitching in the press and forums about DBSS being over-priced, well, it was still snapped up. So, if you bitch, and still buy, then who the hell are you kidding? The pricing issue started being contentious when HDB decided to allow private developers a foot into the door when it comes to building public housing. These are private developers, profiteering merchants mind you, they are not there to run a damn charity. Obviously they are going to max their profits, any businessman with half a brain would do that. And if you don’t like it, then don’t buy it right? You can just buy a regular HDB flat and save yourself perhaps 200k – 300k, that’s a heck of a lot of money. Or maybe you buy it in the hope of selling it for even more next time, perhaps. Or maybe you buy it because it makes you look good, look more atas, because you stay in a DBSS and not a HDB. Hmm…….sorry, but it’s still public housing, no? And it doesn’t even have facilities, or does it? It’s not like an Executive Condo right? So that means, hey, you paid almost 800k for a glossed up flat? I guess that money can buy a 2+1 room condo in the outskirts that isn’t even 99 years leasehold. Of course I’m looking at it very simplistically because frankly, I don’t know what are the extras a DBSS has that HDB doesn’t, maybe it does warrant that price tag. Though I doubt it. Not unless they outfitted the place with Grohe shower stuff, Miele electronics, Italian marble flooring. What are the odds of that.

Why do the trains and Raffles Place feel emptier on Fridays? Are Singaporeans now so rich they can afford to work 4 day weeks?

Little Bean's first words are "MaMa" (for his grandmother), "MumMum" (for his food) and the latest is "Go".

Comfort food

My family and i used to have a somewhat similar dish at the now defunct Charming Garden Restaurant at what used to be Orchid Inn Hotel along Bukit Timah Road (now the site of the Glyndebourne Condo). The best version we could come up with - Vegetarian goose meat and cucumber sticks dipped with Sweet Sauce (must be the brand with the fat man logo) and wrapped with Egg Crepe.

Lana Cake, our comfort food

We always had Lana Cake for our birthdays.

Yes, there are better chocolate cakes around.

And cake shops that are a wee bit more polite, and that actually provide a plastic knife for you to cut your cake.

But Lana Cake is our comfort food.....and so for Little Bean's 1st Birthday, i ordered Lana.

Update on Little Bean and the Office Cooler

I wake up tired each day in a good way. That’s the thing with having Little Bean, a lot of my time is no longer my own. Lazy evenings spent lying on the bed reading a trashy book are but a fond memory. I now read right before I sleep, oftentimes dozing after 5 pages. Time whizzes by, it’s going into the 3rd month of 2011, meaning Little Bean is almost a year old. He is cute as hell, and tyrannical and kingly. He’s the lord of the manor, that little rascal who doesn’t cower much to reprimands or a smack on the hand. He’s a filthy little pig, who doesn’t like it when we wipe drool off his face. And a poopy diaper? No sweat, he won’t cry. We brought him shoe shopping yesterday and when mum knelt down to try the shoe on for him, he obligingly lifted his foot up. I wonder where he learned that from. He’s more proportionate in size now that he is so active, which also means his once in your face cheeks have somewhat…..downsized. As my cousin put it “Baby, where did your cheeks go?” Now I know what a friend meant when she said to enjoy baby fats while they lasted. He’s started going for Kindermusik class as well, once a week, the sort of fun time lessons with music and dance and songs. I don’t want to over-stress him, so I know I will at most send him for 2 classes.

The water cooler at work is on the blink (if you count rust and a roach in the cooler as being on the blink) so I just hoofed it to Guardian Pharmacy to procure two bottles of 1.5L distilled water. I’m not drinking water fortified with rust (iron) and possibly roach crap, not until they replace whatever needs to be replaced. Oh yuck. The CNY decorations in the office are still hung up, I guess if we keep it for another 11 months, the lanterns will be in season again.

CNY thoughts

Chinese New Year visiting reminded me that I possess the social skills of a toadstool.

And i also learned this.....after I visited a household that had 5 screaming hyper-active toddlers.....that the noise of 5 kids combined is enough to make one's ovaries shrivel up and die. Seriously.....I cannot imagine how many people can listen to that noise, see the mess and think to themselves "I love children!". I looked at them and i was thinking aloud "Oh god, stopping at 1 may be the right way to go."

Another thing to which I have no answer. I don't know if my vagina looks the same pre and post pregnancy. The question posed to me was "Is 'down there' still the same?" And you know what? I really don't know because i never took a mirror, put it 'down there' and gave it a thorough examination. And what the hell, now i'll never know the answer coz I'm post and will never know what the pre looked like. It was odd discussing vaginas with my cousin's new wife, because i'm thinking - what the hell, do you actually hold a mirror and check your vagina on a regular basis? The next time i see her, all i will be thinking would be - i think this woman checks her vagina with a mirror very often!

I'm such a sucker for him

I put Little Bean on the mattress yesterday afternoon to play. I lay on one side of the mattress and was so damn tired i fell asleep. I woke a minute later to Little Bean pinching my nose.....yes, he used two fingers to pinch my nose very firmly until i opened my eyes to peer at him. Only then did he release his hold on my nose, and gifted me with a cheeky grin. It was so funny I wasn't at all angry.

Looking back

I’m not a ‘set my resolutions for the New Year’ sort of person. I have no resolutions, because I know the chances of achieving anything is practically squat. I’m just that sort of person. Some may see it as not having goals for myself, well, maybe that’s true but really, a somewhat uneventful life can also be good. I don’t think the ‘goal’ of ‘acquiring more Prada bags’ really counts for any sort of respectability. Truly. Mayhap I may look stupid, but I do understand the words that come out of my mouth. Well, 90% of the time anyway.

Is Year 2010 over already? It really whizzed by, stopping for hardly anything. The biggest achievement for the year past? Giving birth, of course. Actually, that godawful morning sickness (a misnomer) I endured in 2009 seemed just not too long ago. My Little Bean is 10 months old today, soon he will be a year old, then he will be toddling, off he goes to pre-nursery in 2013, then it will be Primary 1 registration, spelling, dictation, examinations, college, university………they grow up so fast! Soon I will be guarding my front door with a shotgun and using a club to beat off the girls who come sniffing around. Little Bean is that cute. See? Parents are myopic, they always think their babies are the cutest. The morning sickness, the exorbitant gynae bills, the pain of birthing……was it worth it? You bet! My Little Bean’s worth it! Even if that last 5kg has clung on stubbornly to my wide hips and saggy ass.

The 1st tooth

At the tender age of 9.5 months, Little Bean has finally sprouted his 1st tooth....his bottom front tooth. He cannot beat my record.....i had my first tooth at the ripe old age of 13 months. As the old fogies say.....the slower one hits the milestones (e.g. learning to sit, learning to crawl, 1st tooth sprouting), the better one's life.

My darling bean

Little Bean always gets so much attention when i bring him out. I was at the Nespresso counter at Takashimaya this morning when one of the ladies molested his thigh by stroking it....boohoo.....and my son just glared at her. Hmph. Another lady told her male colleague "He's so cute, like a hamburger. Quick go give birth to one." Seriously, hamburger? But he is cute. I think when some people look at him, they think "I want one of those!".
